ImBlackInPharma | Kwame Marfo

Kwame Marfo - Head of Marketing Strategy and Innovation

What do you do?

I work at Komodo Health. Komodo Health is a health tech software company where we build software powered by our proprietary real-world data (RWD) to deliver insights that can address numerous challenges across biopharma in clinical development, commercialisation, medical affairs through to market access. In my role, I seek market insights to help the organisation understand customer needs and ultimately determine what we should build, why we should build it and how best to position it to customers.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The opportunity to create and collaborate. It’s fulfilling to be in a position where you can grow, help shape an organisation and ultimately play a role in shifting how the biopharma industry generates insights that can shape how drugs are developed and healthcare is delivered.

How did you get into Pharma?

Through a lot of coaching and support I became aware of the many scientific breakthroughs that were leading to the development of new medicine and I wanted to be part of that world. I’m actually a “nomadic” chemical engineer. I started my career in large scale manufacturing of monoclonal antibodies, moved to support insights and analytics in clinical operations and eventually had the opportunity to join Komodo Health to help lead the development it software technology and RWD strategy.

Why Pharma?

I’ve always been driven by a mission to improve access to healthcare, stemming from losing my father to kidney disease when I was in high school. For me it has always been about learning and finding the roles that can leverage my strengths all the while managing the tension between working on things that may have a direct impact on about a thousand patients with immediate needs versus more system-wide solutions that take longer to implement but impact millions of patients.

What has your experience been being #BlackInPharma?

I’ve been extremely fortunate to work in supportive environments and I’ve had so many leaders directly support my growth. I’ve definitely been in rooms where I was the only black person but I truly see those as opportunities to share my unique perspectives and advocate for others who may have similar experiences to mine.

Top tips to getting into your role / Pharma?

I’ll answer with 5 guiding principles that I think apply across the board to your career and not just Pharma:

  1. “Your network is your net worth”

  2. See your career as more of a lattice than a ladder, take the unconventional path…

  3. Know your story and share your story

  4. Truly listen whenever you get a “no” because it may actually be a “not yet”

  5. “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” - James Clear
